DIOVAN and DIOVAN HCT are not approved to prevent stroke or heart attack resulting from high blood pressure.
DIOVAN and DIOVAN HCT are prescription medications for the treatment of high blood pressure. DIOVAN HCT may be used when one medicine to lower your high blood pressure is not enough. DIOVAN HCT may also be used as the first medicine to lower blood pressure if your doctor decides you are likely to need more than one medicine.

What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN and DIOVAN HCT?
If you become pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN or DIOVAN HCT and call your doctor right away. DIOVAN or DIOVAN HCT can harm an unborn baby causing injury and even death. If you plan to become pregnant, talk to your doctor about other treatment options to lower your blood pressure before taking DIOVAN or DIOVAN HCT.
Do not take DIOVAN HCT if you have a history of reduced urine output, or have allergic reactions to certain drugs known as sulfonamides. If you're taking DIOVAN HCT, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and medicines you take, including: liver or kidney problems, lupus or if you take lithium.
The most serious side effects with both DIOVAN and DIOVAN HCT are low blood pressure (hypotension) and kidney problems, and additionally with DIOVAN HCT, skin rash. Other side effects with DIOVAN and DIOVAN HCT have generally been mild. The most common side effects with DIOVAN are viral infection, fatigue, and abdominal pain. The most common side effect with DIOVAN HCT is cold like symptoms.
Liver problems may get worse in people who already have liver problems and take DIOVAN HCT.
People with and without allergy problems or asthma who take DIOVAN HCT may get allergic reactions.
Hydrochlorothiazide, one of the medicines in DIOVAN HCT, may cause Lupus to become active or worse.
Tell your doctor about any of the following signs and symptoms of fluid and electrolyte problems: dry mouth, thirst, lack of energy (lethargic), weakness, drowsiness, restlessness, confusion, seizures, muscle pain or cramps, muscle fatigue, very low urine output, fast heartbeat, or nausea and vomiting.
High blood pressure medications like DIOVAN, have generally been found to be less effective in African Americans.
